Six policemen died and dozens more are missing after insurgents set off roadside bombs and opened fire on a police convoy near a US military base north of Baghdad.

The policemen were returning to Najaf, south of Baghdad, after picking up new vehicles from the military base ? only 35 out of the 80 policemen in the convoy have been accounted for.

The attackers destroyed most of the new police convoy and surrounded the bomb site firing their guns into the remains of the vehicles shouting "God is great, long live jihad."

At least seven people were injured by a suicide bomb attack on a police station in Mosul. Police prevented further deaths by shooting the driver before he rammed his car into the building.

Four civilians were killed and a further six injured when a roadside bomb exploded near two Sunni mosques in Baquba.

One person was killed and four British troops were injured when a suicide bomber, targeting a British military convoy, blew himself up in the southern city of Basra.
