Occupied Jerusalem: Two rockets fired from Egypt’s violence-plagued Sinai Peninsula exploded inside Israeli-claimed territory on Friday without causing casualties, a military spokesman said.

“Two rockets fired from Sinai struck southern Israel, but without causing casualties or material damage,” the spokesman said, without elaborating.

Egypt is reeling from a string of deadly attacks by Daesh on the security forces in the Sinai.

Militants led by Daesh have killed scores of troops, challenging President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi’s efforts to restore security and economic stability in Egypt.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s military deployed F-16 warplanes to bombard Daesh fighters who battled troops in a North Sinai town after launching a surprise dawn attack on army checkpoints.

Dozens were killed in what was Daesh’s boldest attack yet in the Sinai, with militants taking over rooftops and firing rockets at troops.

Incidents along the Israel-Egypt border are rare.

At the end of last year two Israeli soldiers were wounded by gunshots and an anti-tank missile fired at their car from the Sinai.

The most serious incident was in August 2011, when gunmen infiltrated southern Israel and staged a series of ambushes that killed eight Israelis.

Israel has a 240-kilometre (150 mile) border with the Sinai, which is mainly populated by Bedouins who maintain difficult relations with the central government.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Friday dismissed as “propaganda” an Israeli claim that it provided support related to this week’s attacks against Egyptian soldiers in Sinai.

“The [Israelip] occupation’s statements about Hamas helping [Daesh] are stupid accusations... and propaganda that aims to incite against Hamas,” spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said.

“Hamas has made efforts and taken stated measures to secure the border” between the Gaza Strip, which it controls, and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, he said.

“We are intent on (preserving) Egypt’s security.”

Israeli Major General Yoav Mordechai claimed in an interview in Arabic with Al Jazeera television Thursday that Hamas had provided help to “groups supporting [Daesh]” for the attacks, claiming also that wounded militants had been smuggled into Gaza.
