Cairo: Egyptian prosecutors Saturday ordered a Turkish national be kept in custody for 15 days pending further questioning for taking pictures of security forces, legal sources said.

The 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after taking the photos of security checkpoints in the district of Al Haram near the Giza Pyramids, they added.

The suspect told investigators that as a tourist he admired the view of the security forces stationed in the streets and captured them on his camera, the sources said.

No charges have been raised against the man.

Police found out that the suspect entered Egypt on a tourist visa 10 days ago.

In recent months, Egyptian authorities have informally tightened curbs on taking photos in public as the country is engaged in a deadly battle against Islamist insurgents.

Egypt’s security forces have been the target of deadly militant attacks since the army’s 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi following massive street protests against him.

Ties between Egypt and Turkey have since deteriorated over Ankara’s sharp criticism of Mursi’s toppling.
