Timeline:

23 July 1952: The Free Officers Movement, led by General Mohammad Najeeb and Jamal Abdul Nasser, broadcast a message declaring that the Army has taken control over Egypt.

26 July 1952: King Farouq abdicates in favour of his infant son, Ahmad Fuad, and installs a Regency Council to represent the monarchy’s interests. King Farouq goes into exile in Europe.

26 July 1952: The Revolutionary Command Council (RCC), made up of the Free Officers, effectively takes control over Egypt.

18 June 1953: Mohammad Najeeb becomes the first President of Egypt upon the removal of the infant King Fuad II and the foundation of the Republic of Egypt.

25 February 1954: The RCC removes Najeeb from his post. However, he was re-instated after widespread street protests, albeit in a more ceremonial role. Nasser becomes the actual ruler in this interim period.

23 June 1956: Nasser formally becomes the President of Egypt after a public referendum.
