Cairo: Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak will return home soon after more than five years in detention, his lawyer and state media reported on Monday.
Prosecutors have agreed to free him in response to a request from his lawyer, citing a final court verdict acquitting Mubarak of protester deaths in the 2011 uprising that ended his rule, the online edition of semi-official Al Ahram said.
“I expect Mubarak to leave hospital with one or two days and return to his house in Heliopolis [in east Cairo],” his lawyer Farid Al Deeb told in-dependent newspaper Al Masry Al Youm.
On March 2, the Court of Cassation, Egypt’s top appeals tribunal, cleared Mubarak of involvement in the killing of hundreds of protesters in the 2011 revolt.
The former president has already spent three years in prison after he was convicted of the embezzlement of state money allocated for the renovation of the presidential palace when he was in power.
That conviction strips Mubarak of his political rights, including holding public office and running in elections.
Mubarak, now aged 88, has mostly stayed in a military hospital in the leafy Cairo quarter of Maadi since the 2011 mass protests forced him to resign.
He had ruled Egypt for nearly 30 years.
In late 2015, his two sons, Alaa and Jamal, were released from prison after each served a three-year jail term in the same corruption case.
They are being tried in a separate case related to insider trading.
