Cairo: Four Egyptian policemen were killed when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in Giza on Saturday, security sources said.

The gunmen on a motorbike shot intensely at the checkpoint set up on a bridge, killing all personnel manning it, the sources added.

The assailants fled the scene, triggering a massive manhunt for them, the sources said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.

Security forces have been the target of militant attacks since the army’s 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi following enormous protests against his one-year rule.

Most of the attacks occurred in the Sinai Peninsula, a hotbed of extremists.

On Wednesday, two judges and four policemen were killed in multiple attacks targeting an hotel in Al Arish, the capital city of North Sinai.

A group loyal to the terrorist Daesh claimed responsibility for that attack. The same group took credit for downing a Russian passenger airliner in Sinai last month, killing all 224 on board.
