An Egyptian TV presenter has been sentenced to three years in jail after being charged with and convicted of outraging public decency. On her show on Al Nahar TV, Doaa Salah had discussed ways of becoming pregnant outside marriage.

According to the EFE news agency, Salah was also ordered to pay a 10,000 Egyptian pounds bond that will enable her to remain out of jail ahead of a possible appeal.

She had asked if her viewers had considered having sex before marriage, and also said a woman could marry briefly to have children before divorcing.

EFE quoted officials as saying such ideas “threatened the social fabric of Egyptian life”.

She also said a potential husband could be paid for taking part in a short-lived marriage.

After the broadcast, she had been suspended from her job for three months.
