Cairo: Egyptian authorities on Tuesday executed 15 militants convicted on terrorism charges, security sources said.

They were executed in the Prison of Wadi Al Natrun, west of Cairo, and the Prison of Burj Al Arab in the Mediterranean Sea city of Alexandria, the sources added.

The inmates had been convicted of carrying out a deadly attack on army forces in North Sinai in 2013 and later sentenced to death by a military court.

They were executed after court rulings against them became final, according to the sources.

Egypt has experienced a wave of deadly attacks, mainly targeting security forces, since 2013 when the army deposed Islamist president Mohammad Mursi following enormous street protests against his one-year rule.

Some 190 security personnel were killed in militant attacks in Egypt in 2017, according to official figures.

In November, 310 people were killed in an attack on a mosque in North Sinai, the deadliest terror assault in Egypt’s modern history.

In recent years, the Egyptian army has stepped up a relentless campaign in North Sinai, a hub of Islamist hardliners.
