Cairo: A Daesh-affiliate in Egypt has claimed responsibility for a shooting near a historic site just outside Cairo that killed four police.

A statement circulated online by supporters of the group on Sunday vowed to continue targeting Egyptian soldiers.

It was not possible to confirm the authenticity of the statement, but it resembled previous claims issued by the group.

On Saturday, gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle, killing those inside, in an area between the famed Giza pyramids west of Cairo and the Saqarra pyramids to the south.

The Egyptian military has struggled to quell the Daesh attacks in Sinai, who claimed responsibility for bombing a Russian passenger plane on October 31 over the peninsula, killing all 224 people on board.

But the militants have suffered more losses in Cairo, with police repeatedly killing or arresting cells in the capital.

Militant attacks have spiked since Islamist Presient Mohammad Mursi’s overthrow, as the government has waged a sweeping crackdown on his supporters and other activists.

Saturday’s shooting took place on the outskirts of Cairo near Saqqara, home to the 4,600-year-old Step Pyramid.
