Cairo: At least four people, including a policeman, were killed on Saturday in clashes between security forces and the banned Muslim brotherhood supporters in Egypt’s Damietta city.

The clashes erupted when security forces launched a raid to arrest people allegedly involved in the acts of violence that took place last week in the city, a security source said.

Three of the dead people belong to the Muslim brotherhood group, the source added.

The forces cordoned off the Al Basarta village early in the morning and arrested many Brotherhood members.

Last week, supporters of outlawed Muslim Brotherhood had staged a demonstration in the village, resulting in clashes between protesters and locals in the area.

At least 31 people, including a child and three police conscripts, were injured in similar clashes last week.

13 Brotherhood members were also arrested after the violent clashes.

Since the ouster of the Islamist president Mohammad Mursi in 2013, many Muslim Brotherhood supporters continue to stage protests in different parts of Egypt.

Thousands of pro-Mursi and Brotherhood leaders and members have been put on trial since the army deposed the Islamist president following massive street protests against his rule.
