CAIRO: Fourteen people were killed in Egypt when a bus plunged off a bridge after colliding with a truck, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The bus and the truck overturned after the collision and plunged off a bridge on the Beni Suef Eastern road, some 148km south of the capital Cairo, the ministry said in a statement.

The accident also injured 42 people.

It did not specify when the crash happened. A total of 23 ambulances were dispatched to the accident site, the statement added.

Road accidents are common in Egypt because of a lack of highway monitoring systems, poor road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules.

Road traffic crashes claim about 12,000 lives in Egypt every year, according to a recent report from the World Health Organization.
