Dubai: Two more museums are set to open within the year to educate the public on the country’s different variety of clothes and the types of ornaments used in historical buildings.

Speaking yesterday at a municipality event to commemorate International Museums Day, Rashad Bukhash, Director of Architectural Heritage Department at Dubai Municipality, explained that the clothes museum copies a similar idea of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which displays the timeline of clothes used throughout history.

“The museum will not be as extensive as that in London, but it will give visitors an insight into the country’s clothes and its influences. Another museum that we expect to open shortly is about traditional ornaments used in historical buildings, and that will also open at around the same time,” said Bukhash.

He pointed out that both museums will be located in Al Shindagha, and will be operational under the municipality’s supervision.

There are currently over 55 museums across the country and more than 300 private collections with 15 being supervised by Dubai Municipality.

Bukhash said that the museums of UAE reflect the true heritage, culture and tradition of the country and its people throughout the history. The civic body conducts such events to encourage the young generation to preserve the values of our forefathers and their aspirations about the future in tune with the changes in the technology and lifestyle.

International Museum Day is a celebration that held every year on May 18 and is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The event highlights a specific theme that changes every year and that is at the heart of the international museum community’s preoccupations.

Explaining the significance of museums in today’s society, Bukhash pointed out that it provides an educational platform for visitors and the youth to learn about a society’s history, architectural and scientific value, in where visitors can learn about a culture in a short period of time.

“Museums also act as a tourist attraction and there certainly needs more awareness and educational programmes targeted towards the country’s youth, so they can learn about their history and culture,” he added.
