Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police's Traffic Department has again decided to make ID cards mandatory to obtain its services, Gulf News has learnt.

Confirming the decision, a Traffic Department official who did not want to be named, said the exact date to implement the decision was not available. "But it will be implemented soon."

The decision follows a request from the Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) as Gulf News reported on July 28,

Dr Ali Al Khoury, the acting Eida General Manager told Gulf News he was aware Abu Dhabi Police had made the decision to make the ID card mandatory to obtain traffic services.

He said the Authority had written to the Ministry of Interior two weeks ago, requesting such a decision. Although the Ministry of Interior had made the ID card mandatory to obtain traffic services across the country on May 2, the decision was put on hold on May 9, due to queues gathering at Eida registration centres.

Police had reported difficulty in controlling the scores of residents who thronged the centres in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah as they were unable to apply for a driving licence or renew their vehicle registration without an ID card.

However the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai did not implement the decision. The ministry made the ID card mandatory for Traffic Department services in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain in November 2009.
