Abu Dhabi After the successful launch of the second satellite into space on Tuesday, overseers say the device should climb to its final orbit as early as Sunday.

Once in its final orbit around the earth, the Yahsat Y1B will be in position for Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PrJSC to begin preparations to begin commercial broadcasting.

"We are delighted to see this milestone in our business plan reached with the launch of Y1B," said Tareq Abdul Rahim Al Hosani, CEO of Yahsat.

"With the satellite in orbit, we are on track in our mission to connect communities around the region with reliable, affordable broadband services through our YahClick service.

"Communications is a vital factor for economic and social growth in today's world and we are very excited to be bringing this pioneering vision into reality."

The launch of of Y1B, at 2.8am on Tuesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, was recorded as a success.

Weighing more than 6,000kg with a 15-year lifespan, the Yahsat satellite is expected to provide a "variety of government and commercial applications, including YahClick, a new reliable and affordable satellite broadband service for the Middle East, Africa, and South West Asia," the company said in a statement.

The new satellite services once online will be used by as many as 28 communications company partners throughout the region, the company said.
