Sharjah: Sharjah Media Corporation is set to launch two new channels dedicated to heritage and cultural documentaries, based on the directions of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The “East Coast from Kalba” [Al Sharqia Min Kalba] channel, had stared its test broadcasting yesterday(Sunday) on Sharjah TV. According to Shaikh Sultan Bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation, the channel will air for six hours a day on Sharjah TV until the channel’s infrastructure is completed. It will show Arabic documentaries about the heritage, fishing life, environment, culture and practices of the east coast inhabitants of Sharjah. Some documentaries are set to have English subtitles.

In a live phone call yesterday with the Direct Line programme broadcast by Sharjah Radio, His Highness Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi called for the creation of another channel, “The Central from Dhaid” [Al Wosta Min Al Dhaid]. It will also show documentaries, but related to the central regions of Sharjah, which include Al Dhaid, Al Madam, Maliha and Al Bataih, that are famous for their desert landscapes.

The channels aim to transfer the customs and traditions of these regions to viewers from around the world, which will play a role in promoting tourism to these areas,
According to the statement, the TV crew for the Kalba channel will all be recruited from the east coast regions and will be trained at Sharjah Media Corporation’s facilities. He added that 15 people will be hired in the first phase and said that the number will increase with the expansion of the channel.
