Dubai: Limited edition commemorative stamps to mark Gulf News' 30th birthday will go on sale today across the UAE.

Three stamps in orange, blue and red have been created in three denominations with special packages for collectors. The stamps celebrate 30 years of Gulf News.

Empost will circulate 200,000 stamps in various denominations depending on demand. Collectors can purchase a souvenir sheet of which there will be 4,000 on sale with the three stamps printed on it. There will also be 1,000 First Day Cover which will feature all the stamps in a neat wrap-around envelope for giving or keeping.

The stamps will be in denominations of Dh1, 150 fils and 225 fils.

"We were looking at various ways of commemorating our 30 years of publication and came up with the idea of the postage stamps," said Duleep George, Executive Director Marketing and Sales, Al Nisr Group.

Elegant designs

"The postage stamps will endure and will be cherished by not only the philatelists, but also anyone who has been connected with Gulf News over these 30 years. This is one initiative for posterity and we are all waiting excitedly to either receive or send mail with the elegant Gulf News stamp," he added.

A few stamps are issued during the year for selected government departments and well-known organisations. Since the stamp represents the country, Emirates Post evaluates the organisation and the anniversary, said Tariq Farekh, Acting Head of Credit Sales at Emirates Post.

Once the anniversary is approved by Emirates Post, administration work on the stamp design commences. "Usually it takes two months to sell all the stamps, but Gulf News stamps are being introduced during Eid and used on many post cards so it may sell out much faster," he said.
