Readers’ voice

Many happy returns of the day to Gulf News on its 35th birthday. May it achieve many more years of popularity and readership. On this day, I would like to convey my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the newspaper for giving me a very interesting way to start my day. I get up, read Gulf News and then get ready for school.

The paper is an optimum blend of current affairs, entertainment, readers’ views and business stories. Carousel supplements like health and education are icing on the cake. The best thing I love about Gulf News is that it gives a fair chance to readers to express their views and opinions. I regularly write regarding my views on particular reports and stories in the form of community reports.

The newspaper encourages me to keep my ears and eyes open while on the road, in a vehicle or anywhere — so that if I notice anything wrong happening, I have a medium to report and help raise awareness. The newspaper has been very instrumental in improving my general knowledge, vocabulary, reading skills and, most importantly, my writing skills.

Years of success

I loved it when Gulf News launched the community report competition and started recognising readers for their contributions. My favourite moment was when I won it in November 2009 for my report on the issue of excessive waste in Deira. It was the very first time I visited the newspaper’s office and had the privilege of going around the newsroom and meeting all the journalists. It was a great learning experience and undoubtedly the best time of my life. I would like to wish Gulf News the very best.

Through thick and thin

I would just like to thank Gulf News for the spacious bag which the delivery boy brought to us a few days ago. The newspaper will be glad to know I have been with Gulf News from the time it was born! Congratulations and much success to the entire newspaper team – from circulation, promotions to the delivery boys.

Two papers please

I am addicted to Gulf News. If I don’t read the newspaper early every morning, my day doesn’t kick off. If I am getting late, I carry it with me and read it on the way. At times, my husband and I fight to read the newspaper first. A few days ago, for a change, my husband woke up before me and took the newspaper with him to read in the washroom, a habit that many people have.

When I woke up and found the paper missing, I screamed: “Where is my Gulf News?” When I found out, I reprimanded my husband, accusing him of being selfish since I wanted to read it, too. He told me not to call him selfish for such a small thing. But, just as I told him, for me, reading the newspaper in the morning is not a small thing. It is important, and a necessity for me to start my day on a good note. In fact, we even thought of getting two Gulf News subscriptions at home so that both of us could enjoy reading our individual papers. Long live Gulf News!

Always by my side

I can relate with the newspaper from my childhood days. It was the first newspaper I ever read. Ever since I was four years old, I would read the headlines. Gulf News has been the foundation for me in terms of media. I consider myself part of this amazing historic event, as even today I have preserved the last copy of Gulf News in its broadsheet format and the first copy of Gulf News in the Berliner format (on May 30, 2012 and June 1, 2012 respectively).

These two versions of the paper are truly two items of memorabilia that I would surely cherish in the years to come. For me, the newspaper is like a magic carpet on which I can tour all of the world, while still at home.

Sections like Nation, The Views, Business, Sport and so on, all within one single newspaper that comes wrapped up in biodegradable plastic every day at my doorstep help in that journey across the globe.

Congratulations to Gulf News for keeping us updated for the past 35 years!

More goodies

I still have the old eco-friendly bags given out by Gulf News in good condition. I hope Gulf News gives out more such goodies to its subscribers for turning sweet 35 in the UAE.

Addicted and attached

The word ‘news’ is incomplete for me without the prefix ‘gulf’. I came to this fascinating country a decade ago and have been with Gulf News ever since. It was addiction at first sight when I purchased my first copy of Gulf News in Sharjah.

Over the years, the newspaper has evolved a lot and for the better. The news coverage is always impartial and thorough. I’m attached and addicted to Gulf News, just as I am to my cup of tea in the morning. Every day, I sit down and read the paper for at least 30 minutes. I usually scan through the health, education, opinion sections and tabloid!

The new Berliner format of the newspaper has made it very convenient for readers to select the news they are most interested in. I would like to mention that Gulf News has always been very responsive to my comments and feedback. Seeing my comments published in the newspaper is an added flavour to my life.

A few years’ ago, Gulf News handed out two shopping bags to its reader. This was an effort towards a better environment. It was a responsible step as people started using them for shopping and saving plastic and paper bags. Trust me, I still have those two bags intact.

On the 35th anniversary, distributing jute bags is again a step towards a greener and healthier environment. A few days’ ago, I did my shopping using the jute bag. Three cheers for the newspaper for completing 35 years. Keep educating, informing and entertaining readers daily, just like it already does. All the best!

Dear newspaper

I am grade 8 pupil studying in Our Own English High School Abu Dhabi. I am writing this letter to congratulate the newspaper for completing 35 years in the UAE. I consider myself to be very lucky to be a regular reader of Gulf News.

I respect the paper a lot, especially the way it presents the news and is unbiased. I thank Gulf News for giving youngsters like us the platform to express ourselves. I also thank Gulf News for giving subscribers a jute bag as it is eco-friendly and also helps us minimise the use of plastic bag. Additionally, I am a Bengali from Kolkata and these bags are manufactured there. So, I am quite happy that it has helped the newspaper’s subscribers.

A journey of 24 years

I started reading Gulf News on November 18, 1988. I got a good job from a Gulf News Classifieds advertisement, and my life changed at that time. For 24 years, Gulf News was my favourite newspaper. Four months’ ago, I resigned from my job and returned to India. However, that has not stopped me, I still read it every day on the website. I can’t imagine a start to my days without Gulf News.

Movie madness

I love Gulf News very much. If it weren’t for the newspaper, my dream of acting with and hugging Shah Rukh Khan [Indian movie star] would not have come true, but it did. I would like to thank the newspaper for informing me about it. Another very important thing is about the rules and laws of living in the UAE. There are so many regulations that I was not aware of, so the more I read Gulf News, the more I know.
