Dubai: Registration of participants for the Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive closed on the second day after receiving an overwhelming response from the public. Hundreds have requested to be included in the waiting list.
This year's Fun Drive, to be held on January 13-14, will be held in the Liwa region. The route plotted by route director Jum Ali Khan with the assistance of Saliya Jayaweera, Alan Passmore and Nigel McReynolds is billed as one of the best in the history of the annual event.
The Liwa route is also considered one of the most challenging as it traverses Liwa's spectacular dunes. Hence, the number of participants had to be restricted due to the sheer challenge of the terrain.
Deadline
Participants who made it to the list, which appeared in the Friday print edition of Gulf News and will appear again on Saturday, can pick up their information packs which include the Fun Drive number, the manual and disclaimer, at the Gulf News offices (Click to see the list of successful participants).
Additional passengers can be added only until tomorrow and cancellations can only be done till that date. No passenger can be added and no cancellation refund is possible after this date. Participants must submit their original receipts when collecting the information packs. They should also quote their Fun Drive numbers.
Participants must follow the tips given in the information manual as it will serve as a guide for the entire event.
Al-Futtaim Motors — Toyota, which has been sponsoring the Fun Drive for the past 22 years, will once again be the main sponsor this year.
Toyota, AXA, Al Masaood Bridgestone, Dubai Duty Free, Motorola, Nescafe, Orient Travel and United Arab Bank will sponsor the checkpoints.

The Fun Drive is also supported by Al Ain Water, Alco, Byrne, DAW Ironman 4x4, E-Max, IATC, Intersport, UAE Exchange and NMC Healthcare which is providing medical assistance at the camp. MainStage Music and Events will handle the entertainment while Mafraq Hotel in Abu Dhabi will handle catering for the entire event. The Fun Drive is being held with the support of the Abu Dhabi Motor Club.
