DUBAI: In the heart of the UAE’s newest arts and cultural nerve-centre, a landmark destination for art lovers will soon be launched.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday announced the launch of the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District, a stylish cultural destination to be located in Emaar’s flagship development, Downtown Dubai, in the Emaar Boulevard.

With plazas, high streets, shaded colonnades, courtyards, sikkas, alleyways, waterfront promenades and parks in close proximity, the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District aims to cement the UAE’s role as the region’s cultural hub.

Shaikh Mohammad said: “The cultural accomplishments of a nation define its character and individuality. Having demonstrated our credentials in hosting world-class cultural events, the UAE has established itself as a thriving destination for culture and the arts. We will continue to strengthen the infrastructure framework for promoting cultural initiatives through projects such as the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District. This will not only encourage our talented local artists but also facilitate global cultural exchanges.”

Several galleries

The area will also house several new galleries, two new art hotels, an array of leisure components and several residential apartments and design studios.

Sarah Sillis, a Belgian artist and founder of SarArt, told XPRESS: “The opening of an art museum and opera house in Dubai is a huge move towards creating global awareness of the Dubai art scene. Obviously, this is a landmark move for the region. And for all artists who live here, the chances of our work being displayed are now much higher, we’ll have more exhibitions, more international art lovers will have access to us.”

Welsh expat Rebecca Rendell, an artist in residence at the jamjar, says that “a project like this can only benefit the current situation of Dubai, which is a fast-developing art community. I’ve found the art scene in the city very encouraging and welcoming for a newcomer. Now, with the addition of a modern art museum and opera house, it can only translate to greater success for the UAE.”

No completion date has been set, but the design and architectural elements are being finalised and work will begin shortly.
