Through the initiative, DGJG is also showing its support and spreading the message around the world about Dubai’s bid to be the host city of the World Expo 2020.
“We have had multiple coins launched in the past editions of the DSF. And this time when we were thinking about launching the coin, we realised that there’s nothing better than the Expo 2020 in order to support the bid as this is the time when you have tourists from the world over coming to Dubai during DSF,” Biju Joy, DGJG General Manager, told Gulf News.
The UAE is a candidate city to host the World Expo 2020 which serves as a meeting point for the global community to collaborate and discuss important global issues.
This year, DGJG will give away a total of 52 pieces of the specially made “EXPO 2020–Candidate City Dubai’ to 37 lucky winners during the Gold Mega Raffle this DSF. The 22-carat Expo 2020 gold coin weighs 250 grams each. One has to spend Dh1,500 on gold purchases to join the raffle. Some 417 more winners will win four-gram gold coins in the SMS draws.
“It’s like a souvenir that people can keep. All of the winners will be carrying this home. So this message will spread all over the world,” Sunny Chittilappilly, DGJG chairman, told Gulf News.
The group said their support will not end at this year’s DSF. In fact, the group is optimistic that Dubai will win the bid and that plans of making an ‘Expo 2020 Host City’ gold coin, and an ‘Expo 2020 Countdown Series’ gold coins are already being considered for shopping festivals in the future.
Since the start of DSF , the group said Dubai’s gold trade has received a huge boost from residents and tourists compared with sales over the last five months.
“On average, about Dh10 million worth of gold is sold per day from the participating outlets of DSF this year based on the number of coupons that we get during the draw. The figure excludes diamond and other jewellery,” Chittilappilly said.
