Dubai: The quarter-final line-up for Gulf News Blockbusters has been finalised following heats seven and eight in the seniors' teams category.
A packed crowd inside the Kilachand Theatre roared, cheered and despaired throughout the session as over 16 teams fought it out for the last two places in the quarter-final draw.
The first heat was won by Nit Wits, an all-boys team comprised of Rahul Menon (15), Aayush Rajasekaran (14), Zubain Sayed (14) and Nikhil Thakkar (15), who are all pupils at The Indian High School in Dubai.
Quiz club
"There is a quiz club at our school and it was there we learnt about Gulf News Blockbusters. One day my mother handed me a flyer advertising the promotion and said we should go for it; the rest is history," Menon said.
"We only entered for fun but now we've got a bit of extra confidence to go all the way. We've had a lot of support from our family and friends and also our teacher Rosy George, who has been amazing. We'll be spending a lot of time in the library over the next few weeks to prepare for the quarter-finals."
MHS 2 emerged victorious in the day's second heat. The all-girls team, who are all pupils at Dubai Modern High School, comprised of Arthi Venkat (14), Nikhat Zahra (16), Aditi Ramachandran (14) and Pragya Kaul (14).
Venkat said: "We were pretty nervous at first but we've had experience in other quizzes so it didn't take long for us to get into our stride. The atmosphere in the theatre inspired us to perform well and, with the support of our family and friends, hopefully we can win the tournament."
The quarter-finals will be held on October 17 while the semi-finals and finals will take place on October 18 at the Centrepoint Theatre in Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre, Mall of the Emirates.
