Dubai: New entrants and job-seekers in the UAE are often clueless about prevailing rents and types of accommodation to fit their budgets.

Given the sharp spike in rents, experts say prospective job seekers would be better off negotiating company accommodation along with their salaries.

“I am planning to shift to Ajman from Dubai as I simply cannot afford the rent. It will be a painful drive for me as I work in Dubai, but I have no option,” said Arnold Menezes, who earns Dh8,000 a month.

According to Asteco Property Management more people are likely to move out of Dubai to places that fit their budget. “Rentals throughout Dubai are rising and in many cases at a higher rate than salaries. This is causing a ripple effect in the market. Tenants who cannot afford to absorb these increases are either moving to smaller places or relocating to residential areas that fit their accommodation budgets,” said Sean McCauley, director - agency services, Asteco.

The rule of thumb in the UAE is to set aside a minimum 30 per cent of one’s income for rent, excluding utility charges.
