According to Oxford Islamic Studies, jinn are spirits mentioned throughout the Quran that are parallel to human beings, but made from fire instead of clay. They are believed to be less moral and physical than humans, but like humans they can choose between paths of good and evil.
In traditional religion, jinn spirits are said to have magical drives. They are commonly blamed for phenomenal or unusual events and a variety of illnesses — both mental and physical. Jinn are sometimes believed to be responsible for the “magic” behind fortune tellers, communications with the dead during seances and other unexplainable activities. Exorcisms and other methods are sometimes performed by healers to speak directly to jinn and drive them out of patients.
