Abu Dhabi: Hundreds of UAE-based physcians will get accredited residency training programmes in the Emirates according to an agreement signed yesterday between the Abu Dhabi Health Authority (HAAD) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Edication International (ACGME-I) in the United States, singed on Thursday.

The two bodies are planning multiple initiatives to upgrade performance of medical staff in the UAE.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Zaid Al Siksek, CEO of HAAD and John Nylen, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of ACGME-I.

The signing of the MoU means becoming one step closer to making the UAE among the first countries in the region to achieve ACGME-I accreditation of its residency training programs, according to the Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, Director of Health Regulation at HAAD.

“Attainment of ACGME-I accreditation is a significant component of the HAAD’s strategic aims in the improvement of the medical education programs to ensure a highly skilled and competent healthcare work force,” he said.

The MoU identifies areas of collaboration in addressing issues of sustainability of health services and workforce capacity planning as well as improving educational outcomes.

“The MoU marks the first step towards multiple initiatives between the Health Authority Abu Dhabi and the ACGME-I,” said Nylen.
