Abu Dhabi: The Shaikh Zayed Book Award has named His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Cultural Personality of the Year 2010.

Rashid Al Oraimi, Secretary General of the Shaikh Zayed Book Award, announced that Shaikh Sultan had been chosen by the award's Higher Council.

He said the award honours prominent figures for their rich contribution to the advancement of Arabic culture, and for work that portrays tolerance and promotes peaceful coexistence.

Al Oraimi added the decision was in recognition of Shaikh Sultan's generous contribution to promoting Arabic culture and nourishing Arabic literature in the Arab world.

The massive cultural projects in the Emirate of Sharjah support conservation of cultural heritage and active interaction with other cultures.

In addition, Shaikh Sultan has written several books on history, social sciences and humanities.

The Shaikh Zayed Book Award recognises cultural achievements across one of the broadest and most diverse areas of any literary awards internationally.

As well as the Cultural Personality of the Year, the award includes eight more categories. The rest of the winners will be announced in the coming weeks.
