Abu Dhabi: The Zayed Future Energy Prize for renewable energy and sustainability solutions were distributed to winners after a tough competition. 

The winners

  • Large corporations: Siemens from Germany
  • SMEs: D. Light Design USA
  • NGOs: Ceres USA
  • Life Time Achievements: Jose Goldenberg

Global HighSchools Prize

  • Asia: Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bangladesh (UAE)
  • Africa: Kirya Secondary School (Tanzania)
  • EU: Okehampton College (UK)
  • Americas: Secundaria Tecnica 120 (Mexico)

The award body received 579 submissions in five categories for 2012.

Awards were presented in five categories: Large Corporation where the winner will be granted a recognition award, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises where the winner will be granted $1.5 million (Dh5.5 million); Non-Governmental Organisations, where the winner will be granted $1.5 million; Lifetime Achievement Award (given to an individual) where the winner will be granted $500,000 and the Global High Schools Prize divided among five regions with each school awarded up to $100,000 (The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania).

This year there was an initiation of the Global High Schools Prize, a positive message that the committee received from the young generation about the need to sustain energy and to protect the environment.

This year's award represents an increase of 36 per cent from 2011 and 386 per cent from 2009, the year the awards began.
