Dubai: The Sharjah Appeal Court has imposed a Dh50,000 fine on an Arab working mother for employing a housemaid not on her sponsorship.
A 84-year-old Emirati man, the housemaid’s sponsor, had posted an ad in a newspaper offering to sponsor housemaids for expatriates, for a fee.
According to Sharjah Court papers, the mother of three faced legal action after the housemaid admitted she worked for almost two years for the family.
The court papers stated that the woman, who is married with three children, paid the Emirati man in return for sponsoring her housemaid.
According to the court documents, she spotted an ad in a newspaper two years ago, posted by the 84-year-old man in Dubai, identified as D.F.L.
The woman said she contacted the phone number the man posted.
In June, the housemaid wanted to return home so she surrendered herself to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai — where her residency visa was issued.
The housemaid was arrested and detained in Al Aweer deportation centre.
According to officials from the residency department in Sharjah, the housemaid contacted her employer from jail asking for her belongings.
Police and officials from the residency department went to the woman’s home in Sharjah, accompanied by the housemaid, in order to arrest the woman.
The housemaid was sent to a central jail in Sharjah while the court fined the woman Dh50,000.
“The housemaid was jailed for more than two months for working for someone other than her sponsor,” according to court documents.
