The Nasser Rashid bin Majid bin Lootah mosque has a 55-metre minaret which is among the tallest in Dubai. The whole project was built in less than two years and it is a unique Islamic architectural shrine.
The event was held at the new mosque yesterday after the Esh'aa prayers, and was attended by international religious figures.
It began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a lecture by Dr Hamad Al Sheikh Ahmad Al Chibani, the general director of the Department of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, about the meaning of the event.
He pointed out that 'Isra and Mi'raj' is an important event for Muslims where the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) was honoured by God after a miraculous night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem.
Subsequently, the Islamic preacher Sheikh Al Habib Ali Zein Al Abideen Al Jafri was the guest speaker of the commemoration in which he delivered a speech to mark the occasion.
He recalled some anecdotes and the real meanings of 'Isra and Mi'raj' and how it was a significant leap forward for the Muslim nation.
He called on Muslims to be devotees of the Prophet Mohammed who served as a great messenger to mankind.
Sheikh Al Jafri elaborated, saying that the Prophet showed mankind the path of righteousness, compassion, charity, brotherhood and tolerance.
Adeeb Mohammed bin Lootah, secretary of the Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Council in the Department, told Gulf News: "We were very pleased to hold this ceremony at the same time as the opening of the mosque, which has a capacity of about 1,000 male and 250 female worshippers. It is on a site of 5,028 square metres while its structure covers 1,100 square metres."
