UAE women have always taken the lead, says minister

Dubai: At the very heart of the region's tradition, religion and culture, women have taken up leadership positions, said the newly appointed female state minister in the UAE Cabinet.
Addressing Zayed University's Conference - Women as Global Leaders: "Learning Leadership", on Monday, Reem Al Hashemi, spoke about the different forms of leadership and its evolving role for Arab women, and the core elements of what constitutes leadership.
"While in the United States, and in the public speaking tours that I had embarked on as a diplomat, I was often asked about the role that Arab women play in our society - and whether or not it has any sustainable, impacting effect on our community. Many believed that because we dressed differently, followed different traditions, and were not very visible in the public life, that our impact was limited. My answer has remained consistent throughout - the forms of leadership may have changed, but we, at our very core, have always taken the lead," she said.
She said the UAE has been blessed with a government and a system that expands on an already existing leading role and recognises talent and hard work. "Today, businesswomen are more visible - they appear on interviews and sit on boards - they are CEOs and Directors. Today, women are ministers - as well as daughters, mothers and sisters. The leadership of this country has recognised these silent heroes, so they are no longer in the backdrop - but are today, at the forefront of so much openness and reform. The women of the UAE surprise many, in our diligence, hard work, and empowerment," she said.
