Jerusalem: The UAE’s Human Appeal International (HAI) has offered $200,000 (Dh734,000) in support for 700 poor Palestinian families sponsoring orphaned children in Qalqilya, West Bank.

The agency’s programme for supporting orphans provides a safety net for some 20,000 Palestinian families and costs around $10 million per year, according to Ebrahim Rashid, Director of the HAI office in the West Bank.

In addition to orphans, HAI’s support to the population in Palestine also includes educational and healthcare assistance and targets the most underprivileged as well as those with special needs, he added.

Governor of Qalqilya City, Rabeeh Khandaki, in remarks as he received HAI’s financial assistance, thanked the wise leadership and good people of the UAE for the generous support which, he said, will always be remembered by all Palestinians. He added that HAI is at the forefront of agencies providing support for the poor.

HAI is only one of the UAE humanitarian agencies actively involved in providing support to Palestinians.

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) financed the Dh100 million project to reconstruct the Jenin refugee camp, and built mosques, schools and residential units in Palestinian towns. The agency sponsors some 6,000 Palestinian orphans as part of its Palestine relief operation.
