An earthquake of 4.2 magnitude hit near the Iranian town of Jiroft

The epicentre of the earthquake was some 385 kilometres in the north-east of Ras Al Khaimah, according to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS). The waves generated by the earthquake travelled as far away as Ras Al Khaimah and Musandam in Oman.
“The tremors were mild and went largely unnoticed by the people,” said Abdul Qudoos, a Ras Al Khaimah resident. He said he did not see people getting out of their homes. The tremor lasted only for few seconds at around 5.15pm.
Jasmeet Singh, another resident, said he did not feel the tremors as he was driving. “I was called and told by my wife from home on the eighth floor of a building.”
The Jiroft earthquake was mild in nature and it occurred some 10km deep inside the earth, said the NCMS.
Seismologists said Iran’s Kerman region is a seismological active area and earthquakes of low and moderate intensity are routine. This region is located on a major fault line and seismic activity sometimes affects neighbouring regions. Most of the tremors felt in the UAE originate in Iran due to the close proximity.
