Thousands to participate in today's Terry Fox run
Money raised from event in Abu Dhabi to fund cancer research

Abu Dhabi: Thousands of participants are expected to take part in the 14th annual Terry Fox Run on Friday to raise cancer awareness, with proceedings being donated to fund cancer research in the UAE.
The event, organised by the Terry Fox Run Committee in Abu Dhabi, will start from the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel and Resort car park and end at Khaleej Al Arabi street.
Registration timings are from 8am to 10am, with the official opening ceremony occurring at 9am. At precisely 10am, the run officially begins with people walking, running, rollerblading and even pushing strollers to lend the organisation their support.
However, cycling is not allowed because of safety precautions.
"Entry is free and everyone is welcome to join us. There is no sponsorship required because it is not allowed under the Terry Fox International Law. Instead, people can help us by donating money to the organisation," Fareed Dabaghi, the chairman of the Terry Fox Run Committee in Abu Dhabi, said.
Last year's Terry Fox run held in Dubai was a resounding success, with more than Dh250,000 raised in cash donations.
Participants, whose ages ranged from age six to 60, ran, jogged and rollerbladed over a 8.4km course around Mamzar Park.
About 12,000 participated in the run - an increase of around 1,500 from the 2007 event. Many participated to remember loved ones that have battled cancer.
