Switch to a better use
An environmentally conscious dad, John Savage, has taken it upon himself to provide reusable diaper options to parents in the UAE.
Savage is a British expatriate who moved to the UAE 10 years ago. He has a nine-month old daughter, Layla Jane, who is his inspiration.
He said: "My wife and I recently set up a company called Tini Tots as we could not find any reusable, washable nappy products in the region and knew a lot of parents like ourselves who were frustrated with the situation."
After a lot of research and trials, Savage settled on a brand, Tots Bots – a company that produces reusable diapers in the UK.
When asked about disposable diapers, he said: "Although convenient they are not something that should be taken lightly, especially when there are such wonderful alternatives available in the market. The reusable nappies of today are so easy to use it makes you wonder why anyone would still be using disposables. Maybe they are not as 'green' as they claim to be."
Savage has researched extensively about disposable diapers and is well aware of the consequences of using them.
He said: "There is a lot of information with varying figures out there for anyone to read. Did you know that in the UK disposable nappies leads to 400,000 tonnes of waste, mainly dumped in landfills?
"I know the amount of waste in UAE landfills has quadrupled over the past eight years, according to the waste summit held in the country this year."
Savage recommends using reusable diapers that adjust as the baby grows.
He said: "Reusable nappies have advanced dramatically in the last few years and for those of you who don't know the designs are very user friendly and really cute."
The reusable diapers are made of cotton or bamboo cotton and are thus soft on the baby's skin. Additionally, they are a 100 per cent recyclable.
