Abu Dhabi: Hamad Mubarak, 14, an Emirati boy with special needs, is determined to fulfil his dream of becoming a policeman.

"This is the first time I closely interacted with policemen which inspired my ambition," Mubarak told Gulf News on the sidelines of an event for children with special needs organised by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City at Al Khalidiya Park on Saturday.

The event titled "We are exceedingly potent", provided various colourful games and activities from morning until evening for a large number of special-needs children and other children of various nationalities.

Mubarak said he enjoyed interacting with the policemen, who explained the nature of their work and showed how an ambulance service helps the injured.

"I love my country and people, and I would like to become a policeman to protect them," he said. The municipal officials said they were delighted to witness the confidence of children with special needs, especially in showing their talents.

"A girl who drew a nice picture was eagerly showing it to other children, explaining her efforts for the picture. It shows her confidence in her artistic talent," said Mahra Al Muhairi, adviser at Community Services at the municipality.

"We would like to enhance that confidence of the special-needs children to contribute to the society," said Dr Badriya Ahmad Al Daheri, division manager at the Community Services.

She said the organisers were delighted to see the smiling faces of the children and their natural interaction with others.

"By the end of the event, we are conducting a survey among the children for their feedback. We will consider them while planning the next event," Badriya explained.
