Sharjah: After a month's respite Sharjah's notorious power cuts are back again affecting the huge industrial districts which are home to thousands of families and businesses.

Residents complained of more power cuts on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the power outages reportedly lasted up to eight hours at a time; sending desperate residents to the rooftops at night for some respite from the heat.

Levita, who is pregnant and expected to deliver a baby in five days, lives in Industrial Area 11 near the National Paints factory.

Levita said the power cut started at 8am on Monday morning and by 3pm it had not been restored. "I am supposed to take care of my blood pressure and this heat is pushing it up," she said, raising her voice.

Levita said she was considering suing over the power cuts. Her mother said she is using a hand fan to cool her daughter down.

Generators

The "Internet Building" where Levita lives has 84 flats and houses families with many children. In May, the families pitched in to hire a generator, but the Sharjah Municipality would not allow them to run it, she said.

Meanwhile, Rashid Ziad who lives in Industrial Area 15, said the lights were out for the whole of Sunday night.

He said he took his family to the mall and when they got tired they returned home to find it still in darkness. "This is a critical time," he said, referring to the summer's peak temperatures.

The businessman, who owns hairdressing salons, said the power cuts were also affecting Industrial areas 10 and 12. Gulf News readers on Monday contacted this newspaper in desperate need of help.

The hotline number at the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) to phone in complaints was always busy, the readers said.

No one at Sewa was available for comment. Abu Arshad, who lives in Industrial Area 6 said traffic lights failures were creating chaos on the roads.
