In all its glory Elisa Lim Abiog headed to the Business Bay Bridge in Dubai to take her winning photograph. Not only did she capture the bridge’s impressive design, but she also managed to capture the portraits displayed below. Abiog said: “This photograph was taken on long exposure, manual mode, using my tripod.” The photo was taken on August 30.

During the month of August, we asked our readers to show us their finest photography of the UAE’s architecture lit up at night. With an impressive selection of built structures in the UAE, Gulf News readers sent us a variety of locations from varied angles. From the ever popular Burj Khalifa to mosques and bridges, readers had to find the right combination of shutter speed, exposure, aperture and depth of field to perfect their work. Our photography editor, Devadasan K P, selected five winning images published here, today, based on merit. The criteria for selection are composition, perspective, clarity, framing, contrast and light. To see all of the other submissions from our readers, visit our Facebook page ‘Gulf News Al Nisr Publishing’. You can also share your photography with us for this month’s competition.

Aravind Mohanan’s winning photo not only captured a unique display of architecture, but also the bright lights decorating the hotel on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Mohanan said: “I decided to take a picture where lights would dominate the architecture. I found out that the Yas Viceroy Hotel had a design based on ancient Islamic art that symbolises speed. The environment is very calm and serene with boats resting, and I thought their reflection could represent the calmness in the photo.”

Francis Roxas Orenday photographed Al Bastakiya in Bur Dubai for the winning image. While Orenday’s photo didn’t include the modern structures in other submissions this month, the arabesque architecture in this photo was just as notable. He said: “This is one of the historical places in Dubai. The lighting complemented the building structure well, which gave the place the serene environment.”

Deepu B. Pillai was inspired to take this photograph during a stroll around Business Bay with his son. He said: “I was walking with my son. These days clouds are very rare to see and we found the clouds simply surrounding Burj Khalifa as though they were playing. My son liked the view, so I just took that photo for him.”
