Abu Dhabi: On the eve of the 40th National Day, President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday issued a set of historic resolutions aimed at raising the living standards of Emiratis.
The salaries of Emirati federal government employees will be increased from January 2012, according to one of the decrees. The resolutions also allow the children of Emirati women married to non-nationals to apply for citizenship when they turn 18.
The resolution also directs all ministries, government departments and concerned bodies to treat the children of Emirati women married to non-nationals as Emiratis.
In his capacity as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Shaikh Khalifa also announced the allocation of 2,500 plots of land in Abu Dhabi to Emiratis. Additionally a decree was issued establishing a fund with a capital of Dh10 billion to handle the personal loans of citizens with limited sources of income.
The announcements have been hailed by senior officials and Emiratis from all walks of life.
Mohammad Ahmad Al Murr, Speaker of the Federal National Council, said that the resolutions reflect Shaikh Khalifa's keenness to ensure the well-being of citizens.
"The resolutions meet the aspirations of Emiratis seeking stability, development and a dignified life. These decisions, issued in conjunction with the 40th National Day, will increase social cohesion and citizens' loyalty to their leadership, which exerts every effort to improve their standard of living," Al Murr said.
According to the resolutions, while judicial authorities will receive a 100 per cent raise in basic salary, Ministry of Health employees will receive a 100 per cent raise in their work nature compensation. There will be a 100 per cent raise for government teachers.
Employees in the rank of under-secretary and assistant under-secretary will get a special raise of 35 per cent of basic salary.
The increase will be added to the transport allowance.
Shaikh Khalifa also issued a decree establishing an annual award to be called Head of State Merit Award to support the "spirit of the Union" and the values of giving and to enhance national cohesion.
The award, to be in the form of a medal and financial reward, will be granted to those who provide unique services and make outstanding contributions towards enhancing the UAE's status at the local, regional and international levels.
Shaikh Khalifa also issued a decree increasing by 20 per cent the amounts allocated for social assistance in cases which receive support and aid from the Ministry of Social Affairs.
These decrees will add flavour to National Day celebrations that have kicked off across the country. Colourful decorations dot streets and buildings. A series of events has been lined up this weekend. Numerous cultural, sports and charitable activities are being held across the UAE as part of the celebrations.
