Dubai: Dubai police are investigating whether a diabetic coma was the cause of the six-car collision that took the life of an Emirati national at the bowling centre intersection in Al Quoz last week.

The Deputy Director of the General Traffic Department, Colonel Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, believes the young man that caused the incident could have fallen into a diabetic coma before he rammed into the Emirati victim’s car and caused severe damage to five other cars stopped at a traffic light.

Last week’s incident happened when a speeding four-wheel-drive vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old Emirati, was coming from Al Khail Road and hit another car driven by an Emirati, 51, who had stopped at traffic lights at the Dubai Bowling Centre intersection.

Due to the force of the collision, the victim’s car was pushed forward and it collided with two other cars causing the death of the Emirati national.

After hitting the victim’s car, the young Emirati’s vehicle collided with two other cars.

Al Zafein added that the accident was not a typical one as there seemed to be no reason why the car would crash into five other cars waiting at traffic lights.

He also added that the Emirati driver’s speed was estimated to be more than 120km/h at the time of the collision, due to the extent of the damage on the parked cars.

Furthermore Director of the General Department of Traffic of Dubai police, Major General Engineer Mohammad Al Jasem, told Gulf News: “No traces of the brakes were found in the police report.

“This proves that the young Emirati who caused the accident did not use the brake when he was travelling at more than 120km/h and indicates another untypical aspect in the case.

“Despite speculation that the diabetic coma is the cause if the accident, it is still not confirmed to be the cause of the six-car collision as the police investigation is still on-going and they are waiting for confirmation from hospital.”

Al Jasem added: “The young Emirati is in hospital with severe injuries that he obtained from the accident. He will be acquitted once the investigation is complete and once [] hospital tests confirm that the diabetic coma was indeed the cause of the accident.”
