Sharjah: Police have rewarded Sharjah ‘baby snatch’ hero Ebrahim Ahmad Al Shamsi.

Major General Hamid Mohammad Al Hudaidi, General Commander of Sharjah Police, met the courageous father of three in his office on Tuesday morning.

He was rewarded for cooperating with police and for his role in recovering the missing child.

Al Shamsi sprung into action last Saturday, after Sharjah Police posted alerts on Twitter and Facebook, pleading with the public to help track down the lost girl.

Little Lailas Mohammad Ehsan was snatched when her parents’ car was stolen from a petrol station in Industrial Area 6 in Sharjah, just after 10pm.

They left her in the back seat of their white four-wheel-drive vehicle with the engine still running in the unlocked car, as they went inside the petrol station.

Within minutes a thief got behind the wheel and sped off, taking Syrian Mohammad Ehsan’s baby daughter with the car.

By 1am, Sharjah Police posted pleas on its Twitter and Facebook pages, asking for help to find the child, releasing the make, model and registration of the car.

Al Shamsi, a 34-year-old retired military man and father of two boys, aged seven and five, and a daughter aged two, read the reports and went out looking for the infant.

He bravely tracked down the car, with the crying child inside, and alerted police who safely reunited Lailas with her parents.

Major General Al Hudaidi has praised Al Shamsi’s efforts and cooperation with the police authorities.

He also expressed his happiness at Al Shamsi’s quick thinking, which resulted in officers quickly tracking down the missing baby.

Major General Al Hudaidi also thanked all members of the public who helped in the search and responded to the Facebook and Twitter appeal.
