Dubai: In an effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT), a disease that affects 49,000 mothers and newborn babies and kills one every nine minutes, Procter & Gamble (P&G) and Majid Al Futtaim Carrefour have teamed up to support the Pampers-Unicef campaign.

For the second time, P&G and Majid Al Futtaim Carrefour have joined to each donate one vaccine for every P&G product purchased by consumers in the UAE with the aim of raising over one million vaccines to help eliminate the disease worldwide.

The campaign, which started with Unicef and then was supported by P&G, has been very active in over 60 countries worldwide and has raised 300 million vaccines to help deal with the disease. Only recently, the campaign has reached the Gulf region to make consumers more involved in supporting the campaign.

“Because of this collaboration that is being activated in many countries around the world, we have managed to gather the equivalent of 300 million vaccines which has helped 100 million women and their children around the world,” said Ouriania Dionysiou, adviser on partner relations for the Gulf area, Unicef.

According to Unicef Gulf Area Representative Dr Ebrahim Al Ziq, he says the disease could be prevented easily, but to this day people still die from MNT.

“In many developing countries, women often give birth at home in sometimes unsanitary conditions, exposing them and their newborn babies to tetanus spores that can pass through the umbilical cord when cut. The disease almost always leads to a quick and painful death. There are 130 million women and their babies who are still vulnerable to the disease and this why the support of P&G and Majid Al Futtaim Carrefour stands to make a huge difference in their lives.”

The 14 brands that are supporting the campaign in the GCC during 2014 are Always, Ariel, Crest, Downy, Fairy, Gillette, Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essences, Koleston, Olay, Oral B, Pampers, Pantene, Tide and Wella.

The campaign will run in the UAE until September 17 and will start again on November 27.
