Dubai: The Dubai Municipality's Drainage and Irrigation Department has completed several strategic projects, especially in the new areas around Shaikh Zayed Road, Business Bay and Dubai Marina as part of a plan to connect all areas to sewerage systems.
Talib Julfar, director of the department, said the establishment of a giant sewage water treatment plant at Jebel Ali, one of the five largest strategic projects undertaken by Dubai Municipality, is part of its strategy to deliver services in all areas.
"It will be the main sewage treatment plant for Dubai in place of the current Al Aweer plant," he said
The first two phases of the Jebel Ali plant were completed in April 2009 and it has begun operations, easing pressure on the Al Aweer plant.
Second phase
The second phase was completed last October. The odour treatment plant was also completed.
"The Dh1.55 billion project, covering an area of 670 hectares, has the capacity to process 300,000 cubic metres of waste water per day," Julfar said.
The second project is the construction of a sewage water pumping station and pumping lines at a cost Dh580 million.
The third project is the construction of a sewage pumping station and the pumping lines linking up to the main treatment plant at Jebel Ali at a cost Dh191 million.
Julfar said the department completed the implementation of several irrigation projects to achieve its objective of delivering water for irrigation from the Jebel Ali plant, especially to the new areas in Dubai.
