Dubai: The 17km-long Bypass Road from Umm Al Quwain’s Falaj Al Mualla to Emirates Road opens today (Thursday 9), and experts believe this will ease the travel between the emirates.

Abdullah Bel Haif Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works, said that the new road extends from the intersection between Falaj Al Mualla and Umm Al Quwain until Exit number 103 on Emirates Road.

The complete project, including all the road services, cost Dh165 million, Al Nuaimi said. He added that the new road is 17 kilometres long and consists of three lanes in each direction and includes a bridge.

The new road is part of initiatives financed by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan that aim to connect the emirates and ease travel between them.

The project was finished in 24 months, he said. The road links Umm Al Quwain, Falaj Al Mualla and Al Aqran area with Sharjah and Ajman in one direction to Ras Al Khaimah in the other. Al Nuaimi said that the new road will serve as an alternative to Emirates Road and ease traffic congestion .

Al Nuaimi explained that the new road will undergo further work to extend it from Al Aqran area until it joins the Ring Road in Ras Al Khaimah. The addition will further ease traffic starting from Abu Dhabi all the way to Ras Al Khaimah.

The new road plans include taking into consideration extra lanes that can be added if necessary in the future, he said.
