Marcos family to appeal Supreme Court ruling
The surviving family of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos will file a motion for reconsideration at the Supreme Court, to reverse its decision to grant about $675 million, of the Marcos foreign bank deposits, to the government.
Former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Congresswoman Maria Imelda 'Imee', and Governor Ferdinand Jr, said the motion for appeal will be made soon. They refused to give additional comments on the ruling.
The Swiss government held the funds frozen after a people-backed military mutiny, which paved the way for the ouster of Marcos and the ascendance of Corazon Aquino to the presidency in 1986. The former dictator died while in exile in 1989.
At the same time, several rights victims called on the government for the release of $200 million, which was promised to them, to be taken from the $675 million Swiss deposits.
"We want to get our share when Congress has approved a law that grants the share of the rights victims from the recovered Marcos assets," said Congresswoman Etta Rosales.
She was one of the two factions of 10,000 rights victims who were granted by a U.S. federal court, $2.2 billion in damages, for their suffering during Marcos' martial law rule.
