Dubai: Kuwaitis in the UAE celebrated their country’s 52nd National Day and 22nd liberation anniversary on Wednesday evening.
The event was attended by a number of dignitaries and officials from the UAE and Kuwait including Humaid Mohammad Al Qatami Minister of Education, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police and Tareq Khalid Al Hamad, Kuwaiti Consul General in Dubai, who joined in the colourful celebrations.
The celebration included a live band playing traditional Kuwaiti music, a marching band and short poetic skits by Emirati and Kuwaiti children. Arab singer Waleed Tawfiq, was also present and sang a song for Kuwait.
Al Hamad, told Gulf News that as per tradition the consulates and embassies of Kuwait in all countries organize celebrations. “I would also like to thank my Emirati brothers and sisters for sharing our happiness.”
During the cake cutting two horses and their riders walked into the hall.
Al Qatami congratulated His Highness Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the ruler of the state of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti people on this occasion and wishing them more advancement and prosperity. “This occasion is close to our hearts here in the UAE and we are happy to share this day with our Kuwaiti brothers and sisters.”
According to the Al Diwan Al Amiri of Kuwait’s website (Ruler’s court), The National Day celebrations mark Kuwait’s independence from British rule on June 19, 1961. Official celebrations marking the event are, however, held on February 25, the day on which late Shaikh Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah, the eleventh ruler of Kuwait, took the reins of the country’s leadership. The Liberation Day celebrated on February 26 marks the overthrow of the Iraqi invasion of the country.
