The Emirati community has many traditional games that not only provide for wholesome entertainment for young people but also teaches them the importance of values and helps them keep in touch with their tradition.

Most of the games are spontaneous and simple, but there are some that call for immense patience, in the process reinforcing beliefs in the rewards of good old-fashioned perseverance and self-reliance.

Yolla, one of the most popular traditional games, weaves in a competitive spirit along with elements of dance. It is played by men or boys who display their skill in handling a weapon.

Emiratis are very proud of their traditions and hence the importance attached to passing them on to the next generation.

Al Karabi is a game that can be played by two persons and is a test of strength and skill.

Contestants are rated on their ability to balance the body on one foot; players hold their left foot across their backs with their right hands and hop on the other foot, trying to throw each other off balance with their left arms. Whoever falls first or uses his right hand loses the round and is replaced by another player. All participants are expected to cheer the competitors and the game is played in an unobstructed playing area.

Al Saqla, also called Al Zagta in some Arab countries, is played using five smooth small stones. It can be played among two or four players. The trick is to throw each stone up in the air at a time and simultaneously flip the hand and catch the other four before the one thrown up hits the ground. Rival players must also be able to identify ‘special' stones that are hidden from them.

Al Marihana, one of the oldest and most popular traditional games in the UAE, is played by adults and especially young girls. A rope is tied to strong branches of two adjacent trees and competitors must try to retain their balance even as the swing is pushed in different directions.
