  • Al Majaz Park in Sharjah. A law was passed recently under which parks in the emirate will be open to the public only from 4 to 10pm every day.

Sharjah: Joggers and walkers who like to exercise in the park each morning must now switch to evenings or walk on the streets in the scorching heat.

Sharjah Municipality has just passed a law that keeps all parks closed to the public until 4pm.

They will stay open until 10pm.

The law includes free-entrance neighbourhood parks and those which have an entrance fee.

A Sharjah Municipality official told Gulf News the new rule aimed to prevent gardeners from staring at female visitors.

"The municipality cannot accept the responsibility of having its employees staring at women and making them feel uncomfortable," said Sharjah Municipality Agricultural Department head Yaseen Mohammad.

Mohammad said the gardeners tended to the greenery only in the morning.

Thus visitors would be permitted to enter when the gardeners were not at work.

"To combat this threat, the director-general of the municipality has instructed all parks to be closed during the morning, and all parks have to follow the new system," Mohammad said.

However, residents who use the parks in the morning said they were very upset about the new law and its timings.

As the summer heat approaches, residents who like to exercise in the morning would be forced to walk next to cars on the roads.

"I am a resident staying near Mahatta Park and [with the park being] closed during morning hours, this makes it difficult for about 40 people who go for a morning walk," F. Moosa said.

Congested

"All the people are forced to take rounds outside the park on the pavement, making it very congested.

"Despite sending a letter to the authorities concerned by all of us, no action has been taken. It is getting increasingly hot and more difficult for all of us."

Another resident who stays near Al Nahda Park said the park used to be vey popular at 6am.

People would not only jog there, but they also liked to feed the rabbits that inhabit the park.

Another resident, Vanita, said: "We called up the municipality, and they were also surprised that it was closed. "A call made by them to the park office yielded no response, so they told us to contact the office in the park," she said.

"When the lady at the office was contacted, she said she is only following instructions from the municipality.

"She pointed out that in the meantime, joggers and walkers must cram onto the footpath outside the park for their daily exercises.

"It is really funny to know that a watchman sleeps in the park every night but can not [open the gates in the morning]."

Is this a problem in your community park? What other facilities could compensate for it?

Can't the authorities change the timing of the gardeners rather than changing the timing for public? Why would a Gardner stare at a female if she is dressed properly? They too are humans I don't think any men would stare at a lady if she is dressed properly. Can the authorities guarantee those men who come to park for jogging won't stare at ladies? One can find workers in Malls, Markets, and Streets so will the authorities close that too?

It seems that the gardeners are the ones causing the problem, so why should the cities residents suffer for it? If the gardeners can't be educated to act in an appropriate manner than perhaps they should be fired.

Why not employ female gardeners ? Oh, no...there are male park users who may look at the females. Either way it is very difficult for the municipality to take a decision. Best idea is to demolish all parks.

that is a very sad decision by the municipality....if its the problem with workers starring at women then they should make some rules that could avoid women in the morning. there are lot of boys and men who would love to enjoy the park only in the morning hours.

Very Funny Reason to Close down the Parks.... I would suggest the authority to close down foot paths around the parks, close down all malls, and everything where men are staring women as well.... the reason is one of its kind

Gardener staring at women doesn't matter. The visitors should be aware that they are only users for the park. Because there are workers there (gardener) and sometimes they get distracted due to the visitor, that's why they can't avoid to look at them.Visitor should understand the situation of the gardener.

Why should we daily joggers suffer because of inappropriate worker? If the parks have been closed during daytime due to workers tending to the plantations at that time, then their work timing should be shifted. Ideal timing for them to work will be after midnight till fajir when there are no public wandering around in the area at that time and they won't have to suffer the scorching heat.

I am very sad. Not only do we de-humanise the low cadre paid workers,we shun, embarass and treat them as if they were a menace to society! We are shutting parks becoz gardeners are staring at women??? Surely? Lord have mercy! Ok if they had numerous complaints did they try training,re-educating the 'supposed staff?' Are the gardeners such a sorry sight and soo backward that they cannot heed to what they are told let alone make various parks shut down as a result of oggling at women?Indeed we have lost track of our priorities. These people are also human, they hurt too..end of.

We are all human beings and living in a society. This is an insult to the gardeners also. May be next law will prevent women to walk on the street also. Not all the women feel uncomfortable in a mixed society. if one or two feels so then why to punish 1000s other who like to go in the garden in the morning. It is absolutely a personal decision to go or not to in the garden.
