Dubai: The death of a 27-year-old Indian who fell from the 10th floor of the Al Seef 3 tower in Jumeirah Lake Towers on Saturday has shocked the community as it is the fifth death reported from the area in the last two years.

In the first case, a 38-year-old Indian jumped from the 40th floor of the Icon tower on May 15, 2011.

Five months later, on September 27, a five-year-old boy accidentally fell from an eighth floor apartment at the MAG 214 building. Minutes later, his panic-stricken mother leapt to her death from the same window.

In the fourth incident, a 36-year-old Indian worker climbed over the security fence of the Metro Station in front of Jumeirah Lake Towers and walked on the track when he was hit by a train. The suicide occurred last December 3.

Saturday’s incident has shocked the quiet community.

“No, not another suicide,” said one of them who did not want to be identified. “Is this some sort of a jinx? Why are such things happening in our otherwise peaceful neighbourhood?”

TV personality Uma Ghosh Deshpande who lives in a building close to Al Seef 3 said: “I was travelling and when I returned my maid told me about the incident. It was very shocking because this is such a safe and quiet community.”

Other residents said such cases can happen anywhere.

Bina Khiani, a businesswoman whose office is on the 27th floor of Jumeirah Business Centre 5, said: “It is sheer coincidence that another person fell to death in the area. The security here is very tight and round the clock.”

Chef Anil Kumar of the Memsaab Restaurant in the J Cluster said: “I came to know about the incident from the papers and the social media. It is very unfortunate. We feel sensitive about it because Jumeirah Lake Towers is a close-knit community and this has happened to one of us.”
