Abu Dhabi: Permanent representatives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) discussed a roadmap to accelerate the transition to renewable energy in their countries at a meeting held in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

This was the first engagement of permanent representatives accredited to Irena.

The permanent representative system was formed as part of the UAE’s ratification of the headquarters agreement with Irena on October 9, 2013. In future, Irena will host meetings of its permanent representatives at its new headquarters in Masdar City, where the agency is expected move into later this year.

“This is a significant moment for Irena and for the agency’s system of permanent representation, an important pillar of the institution,” Adnan Z. Ameen, director-general of Irena, said. “This body establishes a key platform to engage our growing membership in the shaping of our work.”

The permanent representatives to Irena include Giorgio Starace, Ambassador for Italy; Dionyssios Zois, Ambassador for Greece; Ahmad Yousuf Mohammad Al Siddig, Ambassador for Sudan; Michel Miraillet, Ambassador for France; Ihab Emam Hamouda, Ambassador for Egypt; Osman Mousa Darar, Ambassador for Djibouti; Abdul Khadar Risku Salih, Ambassador for Ethiopia; Nikolai von Schoepff, Ambassador for Germany; Ravindran Robin Nair, Ambassador for Fiji and Dr Thani Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, Ambassador for UAE.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena ) is mandated as the global hub for renewable energy cooperation and information exchange by 130 members. About 40 additional countries are in the accession process and actively engaged.
