Abu Dhabi: A large number of Indonesians turned out for a walk organised by the Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi on Friday. It was part of Indonesia's 65th Independence Day celebrations.
"I didn't mind the tiredness although it was very humid, because everybody around me was in a celebratory mood," said Lalan Purnama, 52, a computer engineer who took part in the event.
Indonesian Ambassador M. Wahid Supriyad pointed out that community members braved the summer heat to participate in the event. "Although the 65th Independence Day is on August 17, we're organising celebrations ahead of summer vacations and Ramadan," he said. "Most of the community members will go on vacation in the coming months, so we're organising the events now to ensure maximum participation."
Several sports and games competitions will begin this week for the community members as part of the celebrations.
Around 200 members of the community participated in the four-kilometre walk. "About 54 minutes and 40 seconds were allotted for the four kilometer walk," said Lely Meliani, chairperson of the organising committee.
All of the participants stayed late into the night for an Indonesian food bazaar and karaoke competition at the embassy premises afterwards.
"Everybody was happy with the food bazaar because you cannot find these Indonesian foods like Mie Bakso [Indonesian noodles] anywhere else in Abu Dhabi," said Purnama.
