Dubai: The body of an alleged medical malpractice victim was laid to rest yesterday, closing one chapter in a case that has highlighted the issue in the UAE.

Mourners from the Kashmiri community and others turned up in droves to bid farewell to Showkat Nazir, a banking sales executive, who died three weeks after undergoing an elective sinus surgery at NMC Hospital from bleeding in the brain.

He was buried Maqbarah cemetery in Sharjah yesterday, following funeral prayers at Sahaba Mosque.

Nahid Assad Basu, Showkat's widow, was too upset to speak to Gulf News.

"I just saw him," she said, crying.

Family members stayed close to her throughout the ceremony at the mosque. Dr Naz Wasil, a community member, said she came to bid farewell to show solidarity to Showkat and his family.

"In our community, it is customary for us to visit people when someone dies. But this case is very sad. Just for a few polyps, he had to lose his life," she said.

An autopsy found that the ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon who conducted the surgery to remove polyps in his sinus cavity went too deep and caused the bleeding in his brain.

A medical committee under the Department of Health and Medical Services is continuing its investigation to see if there were any procedural and systematic errors leading to Showkat's death.

He is survived by Nahid and a son, 16-month-old Salem.
